7 Top Tips Training Together!

1) You Cannot win Sparring:

Sparring is practice, not a fight.

There are no judges, no scorecards, and no belts on the line.

If you are stepping into the academy trying to take your partner’s head off just to feed your own ego, you are missing the entire point of the sport.

You are there to learn and to develop your skills.

2) Your weight matters:

If you weigh 90kg and you are sparring someone who weighs 65kg, it is your responsibility to pull your punches.

Big fighters should use sparring with smaller partners to work on their defense, footwork, and speed not to practice their knockout power.

3) Don’t Escalate:

If you are light sparring and your partner accidentally catches you with a strong punch do not instantly retaliate with a 100% power.

4) Hygiene is Non-Negotiable:

Nobody wants to spar with someone who smells.

Wash your hand wraps, air out your gloves, wear clean clothes and wear deodorant..

Shouldn’t have to smell you from the other side of the gym.

5) Coaching to beginners:

Stopping the round every 30 seconds to correct your partner ruins their rhythm.

Let them learn in their own way as they will eventually grasp the concept through practice.

6) Respect your partner:

Touch gloves at the start of a round to show your respect.

Without sparring partners you won’t get far in boxing.

7) Use Your Words:

If your partner is hitting too hard, do not just bite down on your mouthpiece and start stepping it up.

Speak up.

Simply saying, Hey man, let’s take bring the power done solves the problem.
