Here are 12 foods that are slowing your recovery down:
1 – Alcohol
Disrupts sleep, blocks muscle repair and dehydrates you overnight. Even one or two nights a week in camp sets you back significantly.
2 – Deep fried food after training
Slow to digest and inflammatory. Your body spends energy processing junk instead of repairing muscle.
3 – High sugar snacks and energy drinks
Blood sugar spikes followed by crashes. Poor quality fuel at the worst possible time for recovery.
4 – Heavily processed meats
Low quality protein with high sodium. Your body can’t build and repair properly with poor quality protein sources.
5 – Fizzy drinks
Carbonation causes bloating and discomfort. Sugar disrupts blood sugar stability overnight. Neither helps recovery.
6 – Cheap protein bars with sugar alcohols
Sorbitol and maltitol cause gut issues that disrupt sleep and slow the recovery process down significantly.
7 – Large amounts of raw veg late at night
Hard to digest. Causes bloating and discomfort that disrupts sleep quality when your body should be recovering.
8 – Caffeine after 2pm
Still active in your system at bedtime. Kills deep sleep quality even if you fall asleep fine. Recovery happens in deep sleep.
9 – Nothing at all after training
Going to bed without eating after a hard session means your body spends 8 hours repairing with no raw materials to work with.
10 – Heavily salted processed snacks
High sodium causes water retention and disrupts the body’s ability to regulate fluid balance during recovery.
11 – Low fat products high in sugar
Marketed as healthy. Usually high in sugar that spikes blood sugar and disrupts overnight recovery and sleep quality.
12 – Fast food as a regular post training meal
High fat, high sodium, low quality protein. The opposite of what your body needs in the recovery window after training.
Recovery doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s built by what you eat after every session.
