7 Ways To Steel Your Nerves Before Sparring

1) Warm up until you sweat

If you walk into the sparring cold, that massive adrenaline spike is going to freeze you.

You need to pre-exhaust that nervous energy. Jump rope, hit the pads, or shadowbox hard enough to break a real sweat before you ever start sparring.

2) Anchor yourself to your fundamentals

When panic sets in, technique goes out the window and you start brawling.

Stop worrying about “winning” the round and anchor your brain to one simple task.

Focus entirely on keeping your stance wide and throwing a stiff, untouchable jab.

When you simplify the game plan, the overwhelming noise disappears.

3) Remember to breathe

Anxiety makes you hold your breath or take short, shallow gasps into your chest, which signals sheer panic to your brain.

While you are getting your gloves laced up, force yourself to take deep, slow breaths into your stomach.

Exhale completely. You have to consciously remember to breathe to manually override your nervous system.

4) Focus on what your coach told you to work on

When the nerves hit, your brain tries to process a million different worst-case scenarios at once.

Cut the noise.

Tune out the anxiety and focus entirely on the specific instructions your coach gave you.

Whether it is practicing your lateral movement or maintaining your high guard, executing your coach’s game plan gives your mind a clear, actionable job instead of panicking.

5) Make peace with getting hit

The worst part of the anxiety usually comes from the anticipation of the very first punch.

Accept the reality of the sweet science right now: you are going to get hit.

Once you accept that taking a punch is just a standard part of the process, the fear of the unknown completely loses its grip on you.

6) Believe in your preparation

Doubt is heavier than any punch.

You have to step through your sparring with absolute belief in the work you have put in.

Trust your conditioning and rely on your perfect mechanics.

If you do not believe you have the right to be in that ring, your opponent will sense it instantly.

7) Fake it till you make it

Your body language dictates your mindset.

Even if your stomach is doing flips, walk out with your chest up, your hands high, and your eyes locked in.

Never show your training partner that you are anxious.

Projecting absolute confidence on the outside actually tricks your nervous system into feeling it on the inside.
